Ghost in the Cell
Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Gundala) is in the form of his life with this blood-drenched combo of grisly horror, gallows humour and potent political commentary. When flayed and bizarrely displayed corpses start piling up in a prison run by corrupt and sadistic officials, it’s time for the inmates to set gang rivalries aside and figure out how to combat the invisible and bloodthirsty entity. With all the visual flair and smart writing that’s made him a leading light in contemporary genre cinema, Anwar also throws fabulous dance numbers and performance art prayer routines into the giddy mix. This deliriously entertaining descent into hell makes a strong claim as the ne plus ultra of haunted prison pics.
