Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) stars in Chandler Levack’s (I Like Movies, SFF 2023) black romantic comedy about a music journalist self-sabotaging her dream assignment for a new fling.

Almost Famous gets a Canadian, 2011 makeover. Grace Pine (Ferreira), 23, moves to Montreal to pursue her passion project of writing a 33 1/3 book on Alanis Morissette’s seminal album Jagged Little Pill. But things get a little ironic when Grace procrastinates on her writing in favour of loft parties and garage indie shows. At a concert of local group Bone Patrol, Grace falls hard for the frontman and uses her savvy industry knowledge to become the band’s publicist. When distractions get the best of her, Grace soon runs out of cash and excuses. Based on semi-autobiographical experiences, Levack’s comic, dark and relatable sophomore effort is a love letter to music criticism and millennial hijinks.

Hilarious, slyly self-deprecating and yet deeply compassionate … Mile End Kicks is one that already feels like it has all the makings of a coming-of-age classic for a new generation.
